Ceylon Leather Products Ltd was formally the Ceylon Leather Products Corporation which was privatized in 1991. The first shoe factory at Mattakkuliya was established by the British in 1942 to manufacture boots and accessories for the British Armed Forces. After the war the factory diversified its activities to produce shoes for the local and export market. The factory then came under the supervision of the 'Department of Industries' giving use to its logo.

A new shoe factory was established in 1962 and a new tannery the biggest in Sri Lanka followed in 1970. A new production facility was also established in 1972 to manufacture leather goods such as bags, belts…etc. With its privatization in 1991 the Government Owned business was acquired by S A Perera & Co Ltd. - a company with a long history in the leather business dating back to the first decade of the last century. Its products comprised rough tanned cow hides and goat skins for export to the United Kingdom.

DI is the main brand which is coming out from Ceylon Leather products Ltd as a genuine leather or Leather good. Now Ceylon Leather Products Ltd is a public quoted company & in the process of standardizing its activities in line with the new emerging technologies.
